Temperatures are soaring across the country, with triple digit heat indexes and scorching-hot days this summer. While playing outside is generally a good idea for your kids, when temperatures are too high and the sun is beating down, there is the risk of sunburn, heat exhaustion and dehydration. On days when your kids run the risk of illness or injury because of the temperatures, an indoor dress-up day is a great way to keep them active while they enjoy the cooler temps inside. The key to a really enjoyable dress-up day is variety and a bit of planning.
Start With Your Child’s Alter Ego
Every child has an alter ego he or she loves to pretend to be. It could be a superhero, a princess, a pirate or a character from their favorite book. Be sure to have a costume for their alter ego. Does he long to be a swash-buckling pirate? Has she always wanted to be a mermaid? Halloween Empire has all the best costumes for everything from Harry Potter to Batman and more for fabulous dress-up days. Your kids will love transforming into their favorite action figure, movie character or book hero.
Add an Assortment of Dress-Up Options
To keep the fun going all afternoon, be sure to offer a selection of other characters to choose from. After a few hours as a pirate, your little one may decide to be a princess or a ninja. If you have several options to choose from, your kids can keep their make-believe adventures going for hours. At Halloween Empire, we offer hundreds of children’s costumes at all price points so you can stock up on costumes based on fantasy, literature, comic books, movies and legends. We also have an impressive line-up of animal costumes so your kids can play zoo, safari, pet store or farm animals to their hearts’ content. They’ll love dressing up as a bear or a crocodile and chasing each other around the house!
Add in a few fun accessories so your kids can act out lots of exciting scenarios for their favorite characters. We have swords, wigs, wings, wands and more. You can also find great accessories like costume jewelry, old scarves, shawls and gently worn jackets at your local thrift store or in your own closet.
Create Some Scenery
For an ideal afternoon of dress-up play, create a few oversized backdrops or cool settings for your kids’ adventures. All it takes is some markers and sheets of either poster board or cardboard. Old shipping boxes, broken down and decorated, can become pirate ships, castles and more. Drape a chair with some twinkle lights and soft fabrics for a fairy throne or make a blanket fort or cave for explorers.
Don’t Forget the Refreshments
Every dress-up day should include refreshments, particularly some cool drinks so your little angels, monsters and animals can stay hydrated. Using covered, plastic cups with straws will prevent spills and make it easier for the kids to continue playing. If you’re having some of your kids’ friends over for a dress-up day, cute cups like these can double as inexpensive favors to send home with any guests.
For food, focus on finger foods that aren’t messy so the kids can continue munching while in their costumes. Crisp veggies and bite-size fruits like grapes or chunks of apple are easy to eat and won’t ruin costumes or accessories.
Round out dress-up day with a quick photo session, taking pictures of each of the kids in their favorite costume. They’ll make great memories long after the steamy, hot days of summer are gone!
