On August 8, we celebrate the enduring appeal of cats on World Cat Day. Don a pair of cat ears before you head out for the day to be sure others know about this holiday and how important it is to you. You may also want to indulge in a few feline -oriented activities to celebrate.
A Brief History of Cat Love
Cultures around the world have been honoring the cat for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians raised the cat to the level of Goddess in the form of Bastet. They also domesticated cats nearly 4,000 years ago in order to protect grain supplies and keep mice and other pests under control. In China, cats were revered by Emperors for their intelligence and mystery and may have been kept as pets over 5,000 years ago. Today, millions of people around the world have one or more cats as their preferred pets.
Acknowledge and Praise Your Cats
Post some pictures of your cat on social media along with a tribute as to why you love them so much. Is it your cat’s unique personality? The way he purrs when you’re relaxing together? Her elegance and aloof attitude? Be sure to enumerate everything that’s wonderful about your pet on World Cat Day.
Make a Donation to Your Favorite Cat Charity
There are many deserving animal welfare groups you can donate to in honor of World Cat Day. Some of these focus specifically on cats while others advocate for all pets. They are all in need of funds to continue their operations. Consider a donation to the Humane Society or your local animal shelter, or give to cat focused groups such as Alley Cat Allies, which offers services for both domestic and feral cats, including spay and neuter programs.
Nap Like a Cat
Cats sleep at least 12 hours a day. We’d all like to do that, but work and other commitments usually get in the way. For World Cat Day, take a few cat naps throughout the day, preferably curled up with your furry friends. If you can’t sneak a nap in at work, turn in early and catch up on some shut-eye.
Treat Your Cat to Something Special
Give your cat something special on World Cat Day. It could be a nice plate of fresh fish or a new toy you know she’ll love. Whatever pleases your favorite feline should be a part of this special day, even if it’s as simple as letting her climb into some boxes or a paper bag.
Dress Like a Cat
Halloween Empire has lots of options for anyone who wants to dress like a cat. You can don cat ears and a cat tail, or go all the way in one of our many cat costumes. We have cat costumes for the kids as well, including this charming kitty costume. Just imagine how much fun you can have playing with your kids as a litter of cats!
Volunteer to Cuddle Some Cats
Your local animal shelter or cat rescue is most likely short-staffed. If you have a few hours to spare, call and ask if you can stop by to cuddle the cats. Socializing animals and interacting with them while they’re in a shelter is crucial to keeping them socialized and adoptable. Who knows? You may even fall in love and end up with a new feline friend to take home!
